Convention Roundup

The Association of American Editorial Cartoonists held their annual convention in Denver from June 7-10. Dave Astor covered the event for Editor & Publisher, and we've posted links to some of his articles below. Both the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News (whose cartoonists -- Mike Keefe and Ed Stein respectively -- did an excellent job of hosting the affair) also had articles on the confab. In addition, a number of cartoonists have recently posted slideshows and interviews online from this year's AAEC convention.

The Denver Post turned over a page of its paper for visiting editorial cartoonists to present their impressions of Denver:

And The Rocky Mountain New's report on the annual gathering:

Dave Astor reported on a luncheon talk by guest speaker Sen. Gary Hart, including Hart's comments on what is and isn't a scandal in America today:

In the wake of the Mohammad/Danish cartoonist mess, religion was of course a topic of discussion this year.

Freedom of Expression was another timely topic this year, and that point was driven home by two guest speakers: a cartoonist from Cuba and a cartoonist from Algeria, both of whom had to overcome government oppression and threats of imprisonment and death just to get published:

It wasn't all sturm und drang -- a Friday session by four award-winning cartoonists, who have been using the computer like no one else, pulled back the curtain and showed some of their technical secrets:

While publishing on the internet is nothing new, a panel of experts looked at the way the online model is changing in the 21st century -- and if cartoonists can take advantage of it.

Keynote speaker Scott Simon, of NPR, closed out the convention Saturday night with some very funny -- and curiously astringent -- comments on today's media:

Several awards were also given out at the closing banquet on Saturday: In addition the formal awarding of this year's Locher Award to Wake Forest University's William Warren, the AAEC gave E&P's Dave Astor the Ink Bottle Award for service and support of editorial cartooning.

And Canadian Michael DeAdder, of the Halifax Daily News, won this year's "Golden Spike Award" for the best cartoon killed by an editor. (Daryl Cagle has the cartoon posted over on his blog. Cagle also has a short interview he recorded with DeAdder in Quicktime.)

And finally, if you didn't get to go to this year's Denver convention and would like to see what you missed (or you did go and need a little help remembering what you did), several cartoonists have posted slideshows of the event online.

We will be posting links to more slideshows when they become available. Look for complete coverage of this year's gathering in the August Notebook.
