Dan Carino

Local to Southern California and native to the Philippines, Dan Carino has lived and worked in Italy, Belgium, Germany, and Japan. His experiences, education, and observations both locally and abroad contribute to an opinion and style that is fresh, poignant, and moving. Carino’s perspectives on issues reflect a candor approach that centers on insightful and substantial commentary while entertaining with an astute pen.

Carino has been the recipient of the prestigious John Locher memorial award bestowed by the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists to the best college cartoonist in North America. His other awards include recognitions from the Society of Professional Journalists, Mark of Excellence Award and Columbia College’s Gold Circle Award.

Carino received his B.S. in Kinesiology (Pre-Physical Therapy) from San Diego State University where he was the staff editorial cartoonist for the independent student newspaper, The Daily Aztec. During his college cartooning career, Carino was nationally syndicated by University Wire (U-WIRE) and KRT (Knight-Ridder/Tribune) Campus division, where his cartoons continue to be available to university publications nationally.

Dan currently resides in Long Beach with his agoraphobic half Chihuahua, half Wiener dog, Haas. They enjoy barbequing and watching foreign films.
